Technical Work
Recommended Practices
Voluntary technically appropriate practices that remain distinct from regulation and mandatory standards.
Recommended Practices
Voluntary practice within a defined technical scope.
A Recommended Practice may describe an approach considered technically appropriate after proportionate evidence, review and consultation. It is not regulation, a mandatory AF requirement, airworthiness approval, certification requirement or evidence of automatic Recognition.
May provide
- Voluntary technical reference within stated scope
- Traceable status, version and review information
- Context for professional discussion and implementation
Must not be represented as
- Law, regulatory approval or mandatory standard
- Certification, accreditation or product approval
- Permanent validity without maintenance
Draft is not an official final AF position. Published material remains subject to review, revision, supersession or withdrawal as its context changes.
Understand the distinction
A recommendation remains a recommendation.
Technical usefulness does not turn a voluntary approach into a universal obligation.
Use in context
Consider the activity, assumptions and evidence behind the approach. An example developed for one setting may need examination before use in another.
Technical contextKeep the claim bounded
Adoption of a practice does not prove all relevant requirements have been met. Conformity and programme decisions require their own applicable criteria and evidence.
