Membership FAQs

Clear answers before you apply.

Three distinctions worth understanding first.

Route is the applicant.

A commercial organization, an eligible institution or a person joining personally.

Category is the principal role.

One main aerospace field, refined by a listed participant profile.

Membership is participation.

Not an automatic appointment, Recognition or technical approval.

Routes & classification

Which route should I choose?

Choose Corporate for an eligible commercial organization, Institutional for an eligible academic, research, public, professional or non-commercial institution, or Individual for personal participation. The route describes the applicant’s nature.

Explore categories
How do route, category and participant type differ?

Route answers who is applying. One primary category identifies the principal aerospace role. The participant type describes a more precise profile within that category. Additional fields of work belong in the activity description.

See classification guidance
Can SMEs and start-ups choose Corporate?

Yes. Corporate does not mean only large companies. Relevant commercial SMEs, start-ups and specialist service providers can use this route.

Corporate Membership
Can a university and a commercial education provider share a category?

Yes. Academic, Research & Education supports Institutional applicants and eligible commercial providers through Corporate. The same field does not make the applicants the same route.

Academic, Research & Education
Do employees automatically become Individual members?

No. Employer membership and a person’s Individual Membership are separate. Personal participation does not automatically authorize someone to represent their employer.

Individual Membership
Can students and early-career participants apply?

Relevant students, doctoral researchers, trainees, recent graduates and early-career participants use Individual with the Student & Early-Career category. The profile describes career stage, not an arbitrary age threshold.

Student & Early-Career
Can I select several primary categories?

Choose one category for the principal role. Explain other technical interests and activity areas as profile context rather than selecting multiple primary memberships.

Participation & boundaries

Does membership guarantee a Council, Committee or Working Group place?

No. Appointments are separate decisions that consider relevance, competence, scope, balanced participation, interests and the activity’s current needs.

Participation conditions
Does membership confer Recognition, Accreditation or certification?

No. Membership establishes participation. Recognition and Accreditation have their own scope, evidence, assessment and decisions. Membership is not professional licensing, regulatory, airworthiness or product approval.

Recognition criteria & review
Are public institutions automatically eligible?

No. Participation must be compatible with the institution’s mandate, independence, applicable rules and AF requirements. It does not transfer public authority or imply government endorsement.

Public institution guidance
Can non-members participate in activities?

Some consultations and events may include non-members where their published process permits it. Each activity’s access conditions—not a general assumption—determine participation.

Published event arrangements
Does membership open every course, resource or digital project?

No. Public and protected resources follow their own access arrangements. Academy learning follows its published programme information. Digital project resources have their own scope and access arrangements.

Application & records

What does a pre-application do?

It provides initial identity, relevance, purpose and intended-contribution information for completeness and classification review. It is not final membership and does not guarantee an invitation or approval.

Application process
How are review times and fees communicated?

Review time can vary and applications may be considered in structured cycles. Any applicable fee or contribution is communicated through the formal process under the approved and published arrangements. No amount or fixed deadline is announced here.

Process & expectations
What does Founding Member status mean?

It is an early-participation status considered within an announced establishment period after normal eligibility and timing are confirmed. It is not a fourth route and gives no automatic voting authority, appointment or preferential technical decision.

Eligibility remains separate
How can membership be verified?

The Member Directory shows active records with public-visibility permission. A record communicates a membership relationship; it is not a certificate of technical capability.

Member Directory
Can membership be reviewed or withdrawn?

Membership may be reviewed when eligibility, information or responsible-use requirements are no longer met. A member may request withdrawal. Keep the published requirements and current record information in view.

Member responsibilities
How is personal information used?

Information is used for membership review and related communication under the applicable privacy information and publication choices. Public verification does not imply that all application information is published.

What if my classification is unclear?

Explain your actual activity and ask the Federation for guidance. Selecting a route or profile is not an approval, and review may recommend a different classification.
